What is OASIS?

It intends to accomplish this by splitting its consensus layer from its contract execution layer and offering a built-in interface for privacy-preserving computation between the two. As a result, the distinct layers will allow Oasis to support multiple, configurable runtimes called ParaTimes.

OASIS Core Features

Separate Consensus

The Oasis Network divides consensus and execution into two layers, the Consensus Layer and the ParaTime Layer, resulting in a more flexible network design.

1. Consensus Layer: this is a decentralized group of validator nodes that runs a scalable, high-throughput, secure proof-of-stake consensus. It accepts values from ParaTimes and records them in the blockchain's next block.
2. ParaTime Layer: this is where the execution of smart contracts takes place. Each ParaTime can be created independently to fulfill the requirements of a specific application, such as confidential computation.

Because the separation of consensus and execution allows many ParaTimes to process transactions in parallel, complicated workloads processed on one ParaTime will not slow down or affect other transactions. In addition, the ParaTime Layer is completely decentralized, allowing anybody to create and maintain their own ParaTime system.

Discrepancy Detection

The Oasis Blockchain Platform uses a verifiable computing approach to verify ParaTime execution called discrepancy detection. It allows for the use of smaller ParaTime committees than other schemes, making the system more efficient, and requires a lower replication factor for the same level of security, especially when compared to consensus. The main concepts in discrepancy detection are; selecting compute nodes at random from a population to create a compute committee and accepting findings only if all committee members agree. In addition, a different procedure called "discrepancy resolution" is enabled if there is a discrepancy.

Improved User Confidentiality and Privacy

Oasis also allows private ParaTimes, called confidential ParaTimes, which can be used to develop private smart contracts. Nodes in a secure ParaTime must employ a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) that operates as a secure enclave for smart contract execution in a secure ParaTime environment. Confidentiality on the Oasis Network allows personal or sensitive data, such as social security numbers, bank records, and health information, to be used by apps on the Oasis Network. This potential would be extremely harmful on existing Layer 1 networks like Ethereum or Bitcoin.
