Verifiable Storage: Filecoin users do not have to worry about whom they entrust their information to because the miners’ storage is publicly audited. The audit helps to ensure that miners are storing data as agreed and details aren’t leaked out of the system.

Proof-of-Replication: Filecoin ensures fidelity on its network via the Proof-of-Replication (PoRep) algorithm. In essence, the Proof-of-Replication algorithm proves that a miner physically stores “a copy” of a client’s original data; this is further confirmed by two sub-algorithms known as the Proof-of-Storage and Proof-of-Space. These Proofs work like Zero-knowledge proofs, where one person can show possession of certain information without necessarily divulging any detail of the information.

Hence, the Proof-of-Storage is basically a way for the miner to prove that they have stored certain information without revealing the information stored. Therefore, if a user has stored an item worth 5GB of data, the miner can prove it without divulging the contents of the data; this helps to assure security.

On the other hand, the Proof-of-Space algorithm allows a miner to prove the amount of storage space they are dedicating to storage; hence, this acts as a backchannel to verify that the miner has indeed consumed physical hardware to store the files.

Proof-of-Spacetime: Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt) is a continuous function of Proof-of-Space, where miners are regularly randomly selected to provide their PoReps for storage sectors they maintain. This is done by a challenge that must be rapidly completed; in this challenge, every miner on the network must prove their daily storage, and selected miners are randomly selected to prove their storage and space to win blocks.

Collateral and Penalties: All miners on the Filecoin network must provide some security in the form of Filecoin tokens (FIL) to discourage malicious activities on the network. Hence, any miner that fails a PoSt check will be penalized by losing portions of their collaterals, and after too many collaterals, the miner is automatically banned from offering storage services.
