If you have ever been a hardcore gamer, you would have been in several gaming communities to learn new strategies, engage in global competitions, and relate heavily with like-minded people, so well that it feels like a new family.

When I was about twelve, my dad was teaching me how to use the computer when he introduced me to the popular PC game “Virtua Cop.” He believed that it helped me to master the left and right clicks of the mouse, and honestly, I didn’t care; I just wanted to get in the game’s action as a Cop and kill criminals on the ship, plane, train, or anywhere.

However, little did I know that I would become a “freak.” Yeah, that’s the word; gaming fast became my hobby, and when I wasn’t in school, I was always indoors, playing games. Years later, after playing several new releases of Virtua Cops, I outgrew the game and I needed something more sophisticated, and then, Jacob, my classmate, who was even a bigger freak than I was, told me about Call of Duty (COD).

He got me hyped up about it as I had to grow wild in my imagination to get an idea of what he was describing, so I was determined to get it. I put some pressure on my dad and even requested it as my 18th-year birthday gift, and he had no choice but to get it for me.

Gaming Communities: My Backstory

Yeah, I got what I wanted, and indeed, it was way more sophisticated than what I had been used to. I needed some help, and I asked Jacob for some tips. Weirdly enough, Jacob NEVER had an immediate solution to my problems, but the next day in school, he always welcomed me with a solution.

I didn’t realize it initially, but when it became a pattern, I asked him if he had a cheat sheet or some book from which he got all tips. Jacob initially teased and laughed at me for hours, throwing the usual teenager shades at me; anyway, I was persistent, and eventually, he told me about a Discord community where he got tips and tricks from a group of over 200 members.

So, a Discord Server could answer all my problems and help me when I got stuck in levels? I was definitely going to give it a try.

I signed up, and with Jacob’s help, I joined the community, where I learned many new tricks and strategies, and I soon became badass. In fact, you could wake me up from my sleep, and I will tell you the best strategy and patterns to pass through difficult levels.

Creating My Discord Server

Apart from the Discord Server Jacob introduced me to, I joined a couple of others, and I was often promoted from an ordinary member to a moderator due to my wealth of knowledge about the game; people asked numerous questions, and I was always available to help.

I finished High school that year, but I wasn’t ready to go to college yet, so while I continued staying with my parents, I continued gaming. This time, I had more time on my hands than I used to, so I decided to create my own server and slightly monetize it to get some bucks in exchange for my knowledge; trust me, these freaks were more than willing to pay.

The Converting Sales Funnel

I once read a book about the importance of funnels in every business; a funnel that takes so much liquid at the wide top but only lets out a fraction at the base, and I applied this strategy to my business.

My method was simple; I opened a new Discord server called “REPORT FOR DUTY” and sent invites to all the servers where I previously existed. I made entry FREE of charge, and as you would expect, everyone loves freebies, especially from the guy who gave them important tips and winning strategies for their gaming adventure.

Within a week, my server grew to house 500 new members from different parts of the world, and we were ready to go. Of course, my activities massively reduced in other servers as I invested all my energy in my new server, and I was on hand, answering questions, giving tips, making tutorial videos, and so much more; the server was so active that by the end of the month, I had over a thousand new members, and then it was time.

Automating My Discord Server

Many of my community members were newbies or amateurs; hence, the tips and tutorial videos weren’t sufficient to satisfy their questions, and I announced a new style to them.

I promised to begin a new career mode (campaign), where I would Livestream myself, playing the game with instructions and control for them to get live tutorials, and as expected, they were visibly interested in the idea.

However, I told them that joining the Video channel would cost a monthly payment of $20, while all other text channels would remain free; now, I was taking them into my funnel, and I know that the initial interest would reduce at the base of the funnel.

I added a few perks to my subscription service, such as:

• Priority in getting queries answered.
• Free-to-Enter competitions with cash rewards.
• Giveaways, etc.

In the end, around 150 people showed interest, and then I had to figure out the best way to accept payments.

Accepting Subscriptions For My Discord Server

Truly, Discord had a subscription service; however, it charged 10% of the total income made. Furthermore, some of my community members who wanted to pay didn’t have their own credit cards or bank accounts, as they hadn’t gotten to the legal age. As a result, Discord’s in-built subscription was a BIG NO, and I had to find a solution.

This quest led me to develop some closeness with some other guys who owned their server; however, most of them used the in-built Discord subscription tool, AND I needed something different.
