The term “metaverse” has grown in popularity since the last year, and you have likely seen people engage in metaverse discussions in your environments or social platforms.
Perhaps you want to know what the Metaverse is all about, but everything you have read has made it even more complicated. Maybe you want to explain this concept to your child without using the critical terminologies; this article is just right for you.
I’ll start with a story. Traci and Dave met each other while working in a virtual office space (like Zoom, Google meet, etc.). They both had avatars, and they started communicating from there. They kept communicating in virtual spaces for over two years before finally seeing each other in real life for the first time. They fell deeply in love, got engaged, and decided to marry.
To make the story picture-perfect, they decided to complete the love story the exact way it started – from a virtual space, so they decided to get married in a virtual world.
I know that the following question on your mind is HOW?
How does getting married in the cloud work? How would people attend? And a lot more “how” questions.
Luckily for the intending couple, they work at eXp World Holdings, which also owns Virbela – A company that builds virtual environments for work. So, they made their intentions known to friends, and quickly, software engineers started to design a virtual wedding ceremony free of charge. The couple sent their pictures and every other wedding detail to the software and design team. The team worked hard and produced a perfectly simulated environment, with avatars, dresses, flowers, and all you can imagine via the virtual environment.
The most beautiful part about the whole event was that the chief bride’s maid, who was ill, could virtually attend the wedding and walk the bride down the aisle. Conversely, the Groom’s Best man could virtually deliver his toast, who had to stay with his terminally ill wife.
The experience is similar to building a character in a video game, developing it, and creating a wedding ceremony. However, this time, it’s not a game; it’s a reality in a virtual environment that fulfills the couple’s fantasy without omitting their loved ones.
The story above is how the first metaverse wedding was conducted; it explains the Metaverse concept in the simplest possible way.
The Metaverse isn’t limited to virtual weddings. It is a way of replicating the real world people and elements into virtual reality. So, any activity you are possibly performing in real life can be done in the Metaverse. You can go to work, shop, have meetings, and attend parties in a virtual space.
Why is the Metaverse so Special?
The Metaverse is designed to redefine the human social experience to improve the quality of interaction. Once upon a time, the internet wasn’t sophisticated; people could only send SMS texts and make telephone calls; at the time, it was costly, and only the elite could afford it. But, gradually, technology improved, and in the current internet age, we can communicate with our loved ones on Facebook, Instagram, and other social platforms by text and video calls.
In fact, when the COVID pandemic hit, the internet’s sophistication made it easy for offices and workplaces to switch to a remote approach.
The level of human interaction and relation will further improve with the Metaverse; instead of making video calls, two or more people can have their avatars in a simulated environment, making it feel like they are all in the same place.
Misconception: the Metaverse is just a VR Game
VR games have become popular over the last decade, where people wear VR glasses and other equipment to play games in a “controlled environment.” Of course, VR technology is applied in developing the Metaverse, but the environment is not controlled; just like the wedding, many people can independently participate in a single virtual world, unlike a VR game where there is one “main player,” and other computer-controlled characters.
In other words, VR technology is part of Metaverse’s core, but Metaverse is not a VR game.
In Conclusion
The Metaverse is an inevitable technology; just as the advent of interactive social platforms shaped our communication experience, the Metaverse will take us to higher heights of e-communication and interaction via fascinating virtual realities.
